The more we use the internet, the bigger the files we move around get. There was a time when I carried around a 1.44MB floppy with all my important garbage on it. Then ZipDisks! 100MB of storage. omg. Well, now when I want to share a day’s worth of webcam footage, I need to find a way to get 4GB of video to 12 different people. This is where bittorrent shines.

Here’s a tiny vid to explain how it works. Basically, everyone downloads one piece of the file at a time until they have the whole enchilada. Then in theory, they continue to share their copies with other’s that don’t have it yet.
This makes it easy to download huge files from large groups of users. It’s true that most torrent traffic is used for sharing pirated work. But we won’t be telling you where to get any movies or anything. We want you to know how to share your own stuff with bittorrent!

Just a reminder not to forget about the Stereo Photography class at the Hive this Saturday from noon to about 3pm. Tickets are still available. Come on out and learn how to take 3D pictures! Bring a digital camera and a laptop if you have them, otherwise just bring yourself!

On June 18th from noon to about 3pm, Hive 76 will be sponsoring an introductory class on Stereo Photography. We will cover a lot of fun things, including: basics of how stereo vision (“3D”) works; how to take stereo photos with an ordinary digital camera; tips on getting the best results in your photos; and an overview of several available 3D viewing methods, many of which will be available for in-person demonstration. Students will be able to try their hand at creating their own stereo photos, and each ticket holder will receive a small take-home element to help with their experiments. Tickets are available for $20.

Bring yourselves, and if you can:
- A digital camera
- A laptop with image editing software (Gimp / Photoshop, etc)
- Any cool 3D stuff you might want to share (ViewMaster reels, toys, antique stereopticons, etc)

I’ve given up on 2D printers. 3D is the future!

Every single paper printer I have ever owned has been a constant source of pain and expense [example]. My experience with 3D printers thus far has been slightly better, but a magnitude cooler. The payoff for designing and printing your own real thing out of plastic is a real joy. That’s why some people call me obsessed with these 3D printers, and also why I feel the need to share!
Learn to print in 3D! We are running our SketchUp class again with 2 new dates: 4/17 and 5/1. Both Sundays and both from 10am – 3pm. [avoiding religion jokes here] These dates are separate; it’s not a 2-part class.

Sorry for the delay, but on February 26th we had a successful class based on using SketchUp for 3D printing.
Shuriken
We had a few members and 2 strangers show up for the class. They learned how to make simple forms in SketchUp and design around the size limitations of the makerbot. The designed and printed objects included a Shuriken pictured here, a Barbie toilet, a rook, a laptop lid webcam mount, and a decorative unicorn. Class members: if you’re reading this, I highly recommend you upload your designs to Thingiverse so the rest of the world can print them!

We are offering a class on how to use Google’s free 3D program SketchUp. SketchUp is not the most powerful CAD program out there, but its intuitive design and price make it a great start if you are curious about conjuring solid objects out of plastic and bytes.
This class will run Saturday, February 2/26 from 10am to 3pm at Hive76
You will learn:
- How to make simple stuff in SketchUp
- How not to ruin a model by poking holes in it, what “manifold” means.
- The basic process of FDM 3D printing
- The limitations of the Makerbot
And most importantly, you get to print and take home a thing!

This is a busy weekend for Hive76, with classes and guest speakers and projects out the whazoo, so if you can manage to dig your way out of your snowy sarcophagus, come on down and see what’s happening.
- Friday, Jan 28th – At 6pm tonight, we’re having a new member orientation meeting. This will be one of the first times we’ve had so many new people join at one time to warrant a specific “orientation”. This event is open to new members as well as any old ones who would like to get more involved at the space. Afterwards, we are going out to a nearby restaurant for dinner and drinks.
- Saturday, Jan 29th – From 10am to 4pm we are running our “Making Things Blink and Buzz” class ($40, kit materials included) with Far McKon. This class is a hands-on workshop for building fun noisemakers without getting bogged down in drawn-out mathematics and electronics theory. A couple of seats still remain open and we do take last-minute entries if you are paying cash-at-the-door.
- Sunday, Jan 30th – From 5PM to 8PM we are running a special open house for analog audio hacking. This is an open house for anyone of any skill level to mess with audio electronics. The event is free, you may bring your own materials, or beginner audio kits ($15 – $30) are available to get you started. A few very knowledgeable geeks—Jimmie P. Rogers, circuitbender and designer of a popular Atari Punk Console kit, and our very own Brendan Schrader, cohost of our Guitar Effects Class—are on hand to help out with more advanced projects.
This is just the start to our new year of classes and workshops. We have a few exciting events currently in planning stages, including a workshop on Rapid Prototyping and a series of workshops on Mixed Drinks and Molecular Gastronomy. Also, don’t forget our weekly open houses, every Wednesday at 8pm, where you can meet our current members, get to know everyone, and join our ranks yourself. Members get discounts on classes and kits!
