Growing a Community of Makers
Hive76 has been a fixture of Philly’s maker community since it’s founding in 2012. In that decade, we’ve seen other Philly makerspaces close, shrink, or drastically increase pricing. Through dedicated efforts by our volunteer management, we’ve been able to grow membership while maintaining our core goal of ensuring that making remains accessible. In the past 4 years we’ve more than tripled our membership! But that’s created a good problem – we’re running out of space. New tools like our CNC and fiber laser have maxed out our current footprint.
Basement Expansion
Luckily, directly underneath Hive is an unoccupied basement that could double our square footage. This expansion would open up the space for new tools like a larger laser cutter and bigger woodshop tools. It also could provide more dedicated member storage and Core member desks.
Since we first discussed the basement expansion we’ve successfully grown our membership to ensure monthly dues can fully cover the increased rent and expenses. We’ve also grown our saving to handle the buildout costs.
